I grew up as the only child of four with wavy hair. My mom didn’t have the proper education to know how to style it which led to it being in a tangled, lopsided ponytail most of the time and my sensory issues and stubbornness didn’t allow for much else. When I was a teenager, I started taking a little more interest in my own hair and learned how to do basic braids and styles on Youtube. Fast forward to my senior year of high school. While we were in Covid lockdown, my best friend colored it a bright fiery red and I haven’t had my natural color since. A year later, I shaved my head and I felt like myself for the first time in my life.
After highschool, I debated a lot about what I wanted to do. I have always had a passion for hair and while I had visited a cosmetology school, I did not have a good experience and I was feeling pressure from my family to go to a traditional university. I decided to go to college for early childhood education. But that only lasted a semester before I dropped out and enrolled in cosmetology school the following August.
During cosmetology school I learned a lot, but I also learned that when it came to curly and coily hair, I had to teach myself and find resources outside of school. My partner helped me by letting me practice on their hair, and guided me through some of my first haircuts, finger coils and taught me how to do two strand twists.
I am passionate about inclusivity and accessibility and believe that everyone deserves to feel amazing about their hair and their curls, regardless of age, gender, race, etc. My wish is for every client who sits in my chair to leave feeling confident in themselves. I know how empowering a good haircut can feel, and I want to give that gift to all my clients.
